WASHINGTON, D.C. (WJRT) - (05/23/14) - Congress is trying to prevent military tragedies by introducing legislation to help improve mental health evaluations for service members.

Ohio Senator Rob Portman introduced the MEPS, or the Medical Evaluation Parity for Service members, Act in the Senate.

It’s legislation that was introduced by Rep. Glenn Thompson (R-PA) a few months ago, now, it has its own bi-partisan bill in the Senate. Portman and Thompson joined other members of Congress and veterans groups for a press conference outside the Capitol on Thursday, talking about the Act and its importance.

The MEPS Act would require mental health screenings at the time of induction into the military. Supporters think that will help veterans and current military personnel.

The House passed the MEPS Act on Thursday as part of the 2015 National Defense Authorization Act. No word on when the Senate will vote on the bill.
