Brazen break-in at Burton lawn care business, owner follows thief

BURTON (WJRT) - (05/23/14) - A brazen break-in at a Burton business ended with tens of thousands of dollars in damage to equipment - and quite a story for the owner.

Scott Smith said he was at work at Emerald Lawn & Landscaping, Thursday night, around 11, when he heard someone go through his gate.

He looked outside and saw his truck and trailer taking off.

Smith got in his SUV and followed.

He said he called 911 and proceeded to chase the guy, who stole his stuff, through parts of Flint and then back to Burton on southbound I-475.

Smith said the person driving was doing about 100 miles per hour and the trailer eventually broke away and crashed near Atherton Road.

The truck turned around and the driver tried going the wrong way on I-475, but he crashed and then bailed.

Burton Police have the truck and are in the process of processing it.

Smith said all of the equipment that was inside the trailer is pretty much totaled. The trailer is pretty banged up, too.

"I'm going to offer a $1,500 cash reward leading to this guy's arrest," Smith said. "So someone out there who knows may want to turn him in."

This is the second time, in about one month, that a Burton lawn care business has been hit.

Atlas Outdoor had a truck, trailer and equipment taken at the end of April.

They were found in Detroit burned and badly damaged.

Burton Police are investigating.
