Mid-Michigan pauses to remember military men and women

GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) - (05/26/14) - It's been a day of solemn ceremonies around Mid-Michigan, as we pause to remember the men and women that have sacrificed so much for us. There are a number of events taking place in Burton. The day started off with a parade.

There will be a Candlelight Ceremony Starting at 9:15 p.m. at Veteran's Memorial.
Followed by that, they'll have fireworks at 9:50 [p.m. behind the DPW building.

"It's wonderful, it brings tears to my eyes. It's really great," said Cecil Garl, a World War II veteran.

There was a lot of emotion  at Woodlawn  Cemetery in Clio.
Like many of the men and women, Garl still thinks about his friends who didn't make it back from the war.
"I guess I was just one of the lucky ones to come home. I had some very good friends, some of them didn't come back," he said.

Veterans of Foreign Wars with POST 1452 in Clio hope that the younger generation will take time to remember those who were willing to put their lives on the line.

"The price of freedom is ongoing, we need the current generation and the younger generation to understand that it's not free, it takes people that are willing to step up, serve and possibly sacrifice their lives in order to preserve the freedoms that we have," said Jerry Lemon with Post 1452.

The group has been holding a Memorial Day service since the 1960's.
