Burton families heartbroken to find gravestones overgrown on Memorial Day

Posted: Updated:
BURTON (WJRT) - (05/26/14) - Families say they are heartbroken that on a day set aside to remember those lost, instead they are searching for gravestones.

People were brought to tears Monday after seeing sunken gravestones, overgrown grass and a graveyard swarming with mosquitoes.

We reached out to the owners of Lovedale Memorial Cemetery in Burton to find answers.

"I know that this is just their remains, but I have a hard time with this," said Lynn Brown-Younger, who has several family members buried at Lovedale.

Some people had a tough time even finding their loved ones' graves in this grass.

"It's a gut wrenching feeling that, you know, this is all we get," Brown-Younger said. "I'm just asking cut the grass, raise the headstones."

Brown-Younger says she and her husband had to put sand under her parents' gravestone to keep it from sinking.

We reached out to the owner - Michael Butts. He didn't want to go on camera, but we spoke to him over the phone.

"We've had a lot more rain than usual and so the ground is just too mushy for the lawnmowers to mow everything," he said.

Butts said they were at the cemetery Saturday and Memorial Day, working to mow and clean everything up.

"I feel embarrassed that we weren't able to get things done for Memorial Day, but we are going to work tirelessly and make certain that everything is taken care of," he said.

However, families said there needs to be long-term fixes so their loved ones can rest in peace.

"Would I want any of my other family members to be buried at this cemetery? As of today, absolutely not," Sheery Houston said after taking care of her grandmother's grave.

Butts said they've had their office open on Memorial Day in order to collect names and contact information from anyone with complaints.
