BAY CITY (WJRT) -
(05/28/14) - Madonna mania is about to sweep through Mid-Michigan. The first ever "It's a Material World" fan fest arrives in Bay City on Saturday.
"We're excited. This is Madonna's birthplace, Bay City, Michigan, and nobody has ever done anything with that," said Chris Girard, Bay County 6th Ward Commissioner.
The festival features a Madonna look-a-like contest - and of course, plenty of Madonna music.
"We have Chris America. She's the number one tribute artist of Madonna in the country and she's bringing a couple different outfits," Girard said.
Also on the schedule - a screening of Desperately Seeking Susan at the State Theater, a Material Girl themed dinner at Old City Hall, and that's only the beginning.
"A scavenger hunt through the city, we've got over two dozen businesses offering Madonna specials, we have a bus tour of places related to Madonna and her family," said Gary Johnson, Rock'n'Roll Historian.
Proceeds benefit Do All Incorporated and its family outreach programs.
"We have a material assistance program and we redistribute goods and merchandise to families and help support them in their striving to become self-sufficient," Girard said.
Madonna won't be in Bay City herself, but her dad has given the tribute his seal of approval.
"He was very pleased that a charitable event that is going to benefit an organization that does nothing but good in Bay County and that Madonna's name is going to be used in a charitable way," Johnson said.
To help reconnect the Material Girl with her hometown, the Bay City Commission approved plans for a Birthplace of Madonna sign back in March. It could be installed by the end of summer.
Organizers hope both the sign and Saturday's event can help heal any bad feelings that might exist between Madonna and residents of her home town.
"There's unfortunately been a lot of misinformation spread about Madonna and Bay City. We're going to do our best to present the true facts and smooth out this relationship. This is going to be the start of something good," Johnson said.
"It's a Material World" begins at 10 a.m. Saturday.
