MT. MORRIS TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -
(05/28/14) - A 9-year-girl went door to door as flames raced through a Mid-Michigan apartment complex, helping her neighbors get out safely.

When the smoke cleared, 12 families could not go back home.

The MT. Morris Township Fire Department says the fire started around 5 p.m. at Cranbrook Apartment Complex on Bermuda Lane in MT. Morris Township.

The fire was unforgiving, racing quickly through several townhouses, ripping through one townhouse from top to bottom and burning through the second floor of two others.

Alina Oliver's apartment was damaged.

"There was some back fire damage, and some front end damage to my apartment," she said.

Firefighters say no one was home inside the apartment where the fire started, but people were home next door and inside until they heard a knock on their door from a 9-year old girl.

"I went to everybody's door, knocking and knocking, and I got on my knees and I said bless these people, because this is going to be trouble and we need some help right now," says Ceana Washington.

Help was on the way.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control quickly and no one was hurt.

The Red Cross is helping.
