Study shows MIS Speedway brings in $414 million to Michigan

MACKINAC ISLAND (WJRT) - (05/29/14) - $414 million.

No, it's not the latest jackpot for the Mega Million, but it's how much events at Michigan's International Speedway pump into the state's economy.

That figure was released Thursday at the thirty-fourth annual Mackinac Policy Conference on Mackinac Island.

The MIS is in Brooklyn, Michigan - a small town just south of Jackson. That small town pumps big money into the state.

"There's nothing like a NASCAR race live, you see, smell it, feel it, experience it," said Roger Curtis, president of MIS.

Every year, when those cars hit the road at Michigan International Speedway, it brings with it nearly 80,000 fans, packing the grandstands or nearby campgrounds and hotels.

Among the state's most powerful business leaders, Curtis released details of a new study that show his business drives more than $414 million into the state each year.

"We like do it because it's true economic impact. It's bringing tourist to the state. It's a quality of life for residents here," he said.

The U of M study says, in fact, MIS brings in more money than a city hosting the Superbowl would see.

Curtis says MIS has gotten a lot of support from Washington D.C. and Lansing.

"They've done some things to help us, I don't know if we could have retained our two NASCAR Sprint Cup series without them," he said.

"I've been very involved with them to make sure that tax polices work well for them," said Sen. Debbie Stabenow.

It's allowed the speedway to accommodate nearly 400,000 visitors - not just for the race, but even a wine and country music festival - making MIS a major player contender in Michigan's economy.

"I hope these numbers and what we had to say today, I hope you consider major league motor sports as part of your fifth hometown team - along with the Tigers, Lions, Red Wings," Curtis said.

A weekend full of events at MIS in Brooklyn kicks off June 13, and ABC12 will have complete coverage leading up to it.
