Swan Valley community welcomes home high school senior battling cancer

Posted: Updated:
THOMAS TOWNSHIP (WJRT) - (05/29/14) - A strong, Saginaw County football player almost didn't make it to see graduation.

Swan Valley senior Alex Dils was suddenly diagnosed with cancer less than three weeks ago. Thursday, he's back home and the community is rallying behind him.

Dils has spent the last few weeks in a hospital bed at University of Michigan medical center. He had no idea of the homecoming celebration his friends and family planned for him.

"The strength here in Saginaw brought the strength to Ann Arbor," said his mother, Christine Luplow.

"If there's anybody that can beat it and get through it, it's Alex Dils," said his good friend and classmate Ben Finzel.

A few weeks ago, Dils couldn't shake his cough. Doctors discovered it was worse than they could've imagined; he had a tumor blocking his airways.

After intensive chemotherapy and time spent in a coma and on a ventilator, his tumor is shrinking. His mom says the doctors were shocked at how quickly he recovered.

"He's the fastest recover-er from chemo they've ever had, and I said, 'That's because we have the best support that any patient would ever have,'" Luplow said.

"It's just great just to be able to make him laugh again," Finzel said.

After all Dils has been through, he does plan to walk at his graduation ceremony this Monday.
