Bay City neighbors upset over proposed cat limit ordinance

Posted: Updated:
BAY CITY (WJRT) - (06/02/14) - Bay City commissioners are trying to figure out how many cats are too many inside a home.

Some say an animal ordinance to address noise and smell complaints is simply going too far.

The president of the Bay County Humane Society asked opponents of this ordinance to stand up during Monday night's meeting and just about everyone was on their feet.

Bay City is considering an ordinance that would limit three cats per household. They say people complain of bad smells from houses with too many cats.

Dogs are already covered. In 1995, the city put a limit to three dogs per household.

However, this ordinance does cover beekeeping and backyard hens. Both would be allowed, but you'll need permission from your neighbors, which doesn't sit well with some commissioners.

Farm animals are forbidden, but so are reptiles.

Some commissioners say this is over-regulating.

Commissioners plan to look deeper at this issue and bring it back to a future city meeting.
