Flint Community Schools owe $1 million for GenNet Services

Posted: Updated:
FLINT (WJRT) - (06/03/14) - One mom says she's fed up with Flint Community School's financial problems.

The district, which is already facing a large deficit, owes about $1 million for technology services.

At least one mom tells us she has had enough. That's why she's planning to send her children to a different school district in the fall.

Erika Spiller, who has three children in Flint Community Schools, just learned the district owes about $1 million for GenNet Services.

GenNet provides technology and other media services, including Internet and phone connections, for nearly every public school district in Genesee County.

The ongoing money problems are a major factor in Spiller's plans.

"My kids will not be a part of Flint Schools next year, unfortunately. Their education is way more important to me and right now. That's way more important than trying to send them to a district where they're already in financial debt," she said.

"You owe someone, you worry about paying their bills and again, a district that is in a deficit," said Dr. Larry Watkins, interim superintendent for Flint Schools.

Watkins received a letter from GenNET.

It asks Dr. Larry Watkins if Flint plans to pay 2013 - 2014 fees by the end of June.

"It's affecting all the rest of the schools in the county because if the fees aren't paid, somehow we have to pay the bills, one of the things we are going to have to do is we could be charged with a higher fee ourselves among other districts," said GenNet Chair Wayne Wright.

Flint Schools recently submitted a deficit elimination plan, which was approved by the state.

Watkins says that plan includes more than $3 million for the Genesee Intermediate School District.

"The GenNet debt. Is part of the $3.2 million debt and we're working with the ISD on resolving all of our issues," he said.

"If that's not in place, what do we do then if we already have enough problems going on with the school system?" Spiller said.

GenNet chair Wayne Wright says they're still waiting to hear back from Watkins, but the letter does not contain a threat to shut off services.
