More layoffs tied to Flint Community schools

(06/04/14) - ABC12 has learned that hundreds of Flint Community Schools employees will be laid off as part of the deficit elimination plan.

Late Wednesday night, we talked to School Board President Isaiah Oliver.

Oliver says 250 Flint school employees were laid off  tied to the deficit elimination plan. The school board approved the move.
These employees are food service workers, secretaries, basically non-teaching positions.

Oliver goes on to say the jobs will be outsourced and the layoffs will save the district around $5 million.

Also at the meeting, a proposal to close Northern Alternative Academy and create a seventh grade academy at Southwestern Classical Academy was tabled.

The school district is facing a deficit of more than $10 million.
