WASHINGTON, D.C. (WJRT) - (06/06/14) - Seventy years ago, the Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, France to take on a fierce enemy. Thousands of lives were lost on that day, and now, the world’s leaders are gathering to commemorate and honor their legacy.

President Obama and a delegation of senators are in Europe this week to pay their respects, including Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey (D).

“It’s hard to encapsulate what was done on [D-Day] and what was done on World War II,” he said. “But I think whenever we have a moment, on an anniversary, or in some other ways, to commemorate what they did, and to pay tribute to them...we should take advantage of that.”

Casey said the anniversary of “D-Day” is a reminder of the tremendous sacrifices our service members make, saying it’s our solemn duty to honor their valor.

“It’s a great honor to represent our colleagues and also to represent the country as well,” Casey said.

The senator says it’s a quick trip: an American ceremony and then an international ceremony, and then back to Washington the next day.

It’s actually the senator’s first trip to France. He said going to Normandy gives him a chance to bond with other members of Congress and even work on legislation that’s already in the pipeline.

This includes a bill to fix the issues at the Department of Veterans Affairs, by removing incompetent senior executives, updating the VA’s scheduling system and providing additional funding to hire more medical professionals.

“As much as we need to pay tribute and commemorate and say thank you, we also need to act and vote the right way to really be worthy of their valor,” Casey said.

As he reflects, Casey says this is a day to honor our veterans who have passed, and lend support to the brave veterans of our future.
