FLINT (WJRT) - (06/07/14) - It's a collaboration between school district leaders and members of the community.
Hundreds came out Monday morning to talk about an educational model that would help take Flint Community Schools to the next level.
This event comes a few days after school board members announced that the district is preparing for about 250 layoffs later this month.

Education continues to be at the top of the list when it comes to Flint's master plan.
Flint Community Schools is partnering with the city's Imagine Flint Master Planning Initiative.

During this town hall meeting at Southwestern, parents, school district leaders and other community members  were able to have open dialogue about an effective model for community education.

"We've been meeting as a group since January, but for me, the key is to go to the grass roots and ask, 'OK, what is your perception of a renewed community education model in the Flint Community Schools, not talking about what it was when I was a teenager but what do you need for us to be successful with a new renewed 21st Century community education model?'" said interim superintendent of Flint Community Schools, Dr. Larry Watkins.

"We know that community education is critical to our future, we need to better support our kids, but also our families and make schools the hub of our neighborhood again," said Flint's mayor Dayne Walling.

This town hall meeting also gives people an opportunity to learn about some the challenges the district is facing.
