Lapeer seniors make history, last graduating class from two high schools

LAPEER (WJRT) - (06/08/14) - Next year means big changes for Lapeer Community Schools.

To save money, the district is combining Lapeer East and Lapeer West high schools into one. Sunday, both schools held their last graduation ceremony as two separate schools.

Lapeer West held their ceremony earlier Sunday afternoon.

"It was exciting to be the last West, it means a lot to a lot of us," said Hunter Scharrard.

The two schools are merging into one at the former Lapeer East building. Now, it will simply be called Lapeer High School. For some graduating seniors, it's sad to say goodbye to that intense East vs West rivalry.

"That's when Lapeer got our biggest crowds, when we played each other, but combining, they'll probably have the same crowd, but supporting the same team," Scharrard said.

The Lapeer West building won't be empty - four colleges will be using it next year for different programs.
