Saginaw Public Schools dedicate Loomis Academy media center to beloved teacher

SAGINAW (WJRT) - (06/09/14) - The Saginaw Public Schools community is making sure a beloved teacher knows that her dedication to students didn't go unnoticed.

Mrs. Nancy Persinger was a teacher at Loomis Math, Science and Technology Academy for 47 years, until she got sick with cancer and had to retire in 2010.

She's still battling the disease, and the district wanted to do something special to honor her.

Persinger calls Loomis her second home. The district decided to name the Loomis Academy Media Center after Persinger to honor this dedicated educator.

"The key to it is to be like a family," she said, describing her time at Loomis. She mostly taught second grade during her career.

"I wanted to be here 50 years," she said to a small crowd of friends, family and former colleagues who gathered to watch the dedication ceremony.

Cancer made her goal impossible. She's been battling the disease since 1999, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

She beat that, but was diagnosed with lymphoma years later.

In 2010, it got so bad, she had to retire.

"After she retired, she has continued to come back to Loomis to work with our students," said superintendent Carlton Jenkins.

Then again last August, she was diagnosed with lymphoma for a second time.

To let her legacy of dedication and love live on, they decided to name the media center in her honor. School board members and friends unveiled a plaque with her name on it that will hang outside the center.

"This was really a surprise," Persinger said.

She said all this support helps her through her bad days, along with a healthy since of humor.

"The doctor said if I didn't overdo it, I could come, it's just, you know, I couldn't dance on the tables or anything," she said to a laughing crowd. "I thought well, probably shouldn't try that, especially since the superintendent's here."

She also left a little advice for the next generation.

"Forty-seven years went fast, so those of you who are young, live it up," she said.
