Saginaw County Road Commission suggests some roads go back to gravel

SAGINAW COUNTY (WJRT) - (06/10/14) - The Saginaw County Road Commission has been working with a budget deficit, partly because of the severe winter we experienced.

It has led to delays for some construction projects, and, in some cases, the Road Commission suggests townships might want to go back to gravel instead of repairing asphalt roads.

"The roads are just so bad, deteriorating and pot holes, it's really bad," said Tammy Morse, of Birch Run Township.

That's how residents describe the Lange Road surface in Birch Run Township.

"Very bumpy, it would be better to have a four wheeler to go up and down these things, to save on the wear and tear of the vehicle," Morse said.

The Saginaw County Road Commission has met with a number of township officials, explaining that a lack of money will prevent any major repair projects.

"We are in Band Aid mode," said Joe Wisniewski, of the Saginaw County Road Commission.

The townships with roads like these are being given some options - one is to break up existing pavement.

"Our goal is to not return roads to gravel, unless we absolutely have to," Wisniewski said.

Wisniewski says, in some cases, that might be the best of the options presented to some townships dealing with the bad roads. He says going back to gravel would be a short term fix.

"Over the next few years, keep adding gravel to that, building up the base, and prepare it for a new paving project," he said.

He says, so far, no township has gone for the "back to gravel" option.

Morse, who just moved into her home on Lange Road, says it would be better than what she and the rest of her neighbors in Birch Run Township are driving on now.

"Cars would get dirtier, but it would save on the wear and tear of the vehicles, and every year they can just easily grade it, wet it down," she said.

Wisniewski says the townships he has talked to would rather do a short term paving fix until more road funding becomes available.
