First restaurant inside Midland's East End opens

Posted: Updated:
(06/10/14) - The first of several new businesses at a Midland development, is finally open.

State Street opened Monday inside the new building called East End.

"Put together a menu that has grilled paninis, we have specialty salads and sandwich wraps," said Kurt Silvis, the general manager.

State Street is the first business to open inside the $48 million, four story, 225,000 square-foot facility.

Among the other tenants that haven't opened yet, The Dow Chemical Company, MidMichigan Health and a law firm.

"We're anxious to get more, other tenants in because obviously it creates more traffic around," Silvis said.

East End has enough room for up to 50 workers at the various businesses.

"I love it. There's so much of a buzz and a vibe downtown at the East End. It's just so great to have this," said Jim Nigro, who was visiting for the second time.

On his second trip, Nigro brought his son, Michael. "It's a great environment down here downtown, you know, a lot of things have changed so far," Michael Nigro said.

But in order for East End to be built, Jim's current employer had to move across town.

"This was McKay Press where I work, and I'm sitting right now in our shipping area," he said. "And I much prefer it being a cafe."

He's already giving State Street rave reviews. "Bacon and asparagus, I've got everything. My protein and my vegetable, life is good," Jim said.

Next week more places will open in the East End, wrapping up work on a project that started back in 2012.

"When we first started it was just a pile of dirt, and now to have this looking like it does, it's pretty amazing," Sivis said.

A grand opening for East End is planned for next Thursday, June 19, from 4-9 p.m. That's when they'll have a family-friendly block party.

State Street is affiliated with the organization that operates the Great Lakes Loons, known as the Michigan Baseball Foundation.

Right now 34 people work at State Street.
