Genesee Co. Road Commission Dir. reacts to road funding deal failure

Posted: Updated:
GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) - (06/13/14) -  Roads in desperate need of repair may have to stay as is, for now, after lawmakers failed to reach a major road funding deal before going on summer break.

State senators tried one more time to pass that gas tax late Thursday night.

In the end, they ended up adjourning without the big fix for roads Gov. Rick Snyder has pushed for.

"Frankly, it's unrealistic that we would expect to see any type of decision on road funding, that would impact us, where we receive any money earlier than July or August next year - 2015," said John Daly, Genesee County Road Commission manager-director.

Daly said his office is missing out on $4 - $4.5 million it desperately needs.

He said that means reduced services and likely layoffs - maybe as many as 12.

It's bad news when it comes to snow and ice removal next winter, too. Daly said it typically takes about 36 hours to get through the county. With cuts, he's expecting, he says it could be up to 72 hours.

Daly also expects to have to take another look at the cost-sharing relationship the road commission has with subdivision reconstruction.

"The average person in Michigan, this past year, was spending about $800 a year in automobile repairs," he said. "That's far and away what they would have seen in any type of fuel tax increase."
