Byron continues to clean up after major fire in central business district

BRYON (WJRT) - (06/13/14) - A Mid-Michigan community is continuing to clean up from a major fire that caused extensive damage to its central business district.

Fire destroyed a number of businesses in downtown Byron, Oct. 1, 2012.

A state fire marshal determined it was arson.

Friday, an excavator was piling bricks in the basement of the building.

One member of the Byron DDA says they're looking for a developer willing to find a good use for the property. He thinks a number of business could thrive there.

"I believe so because I think that even though Byron has been through some hard times, I do believe there is room for business growth in the town, absolutely. There are a lot of people excited about it. A lot of people want to see Byron grow back and become the town it once was," said Chris Dickinson, of Matador Pizza.

The basements will be filled in and a green space developed for the time being.
