Two state championships in one day for Bay City Western High School

BAY CITY (WJRT) - (06/14/14) - The Bay City Western High School softball and baseball teams each won their respective Division I championship titles, Saturday.

It's a rare feat, only three other schools have had simultaneous baseball and softball champions.

"Most schools go their whole history without winning a title, and we did it twice in a single year," said Bay City Western Senior Scott Badour.

Saturday afternoon, the teams arrived home to a brief celebration near the Western Warrior Softball field. Both players and coaches were speechless.

"I feel wonderful, it's a very surreal feeling, I just can't believe it," said softball coach Rick Garlinghouse.

"It feels really great and it's just really hard to put it into words," said senior Ashtyn Decatur.

This year's win is also special for the Lady Warriors, after coming so close to a championship last year.

"We thought we had it last year and we finally got it this year, it's amazing," said senior Kaylynn Carpenter.

For the baseball team, this is their second consecutive championship. It's even sweeter for them because no one saw them coming.

"It's great! I know how the other kids felt last year and this year it's even better because we were unexpected to win," said senior Seth Freed.
