Teen dies after accident in Thomas Township

Posted: Updated:
THOMAS TOWNSHIP (WJRT) - (06/19/14) - Two weeks ago, Dakota Hill finished up high school.

Thursday, his friends are in mourning after he was killed in a car accident.

The 18-year-old Swan Valley High School graduate died from his injuries after a crash in Saginaw County, Wednesday night.

It happened at the traffic light at Gratiot and River Roads in Thomas Township.

Police say Hill was going east on Gratiot when his pickup collided with a car at the intersection.

The two people in that car were hurt, but their injuries are non-life threatening.

Police are still investigating.

The Swan Valley community is once again coming together to help a family cope with tragedy.

"He was a great kid, a salt of the earth type person," said Craig Blower, principal at Swan Valley High.

Wednesday night, Hill was returning to a friend's house after picking up some parts to continue working on a dirt bike, when his pick-up truck hit a car.

"He was always smiling, he was always laughing," said Nic Maldonado.

Maldonado gathered with friends the day after the tragedy. He is joining the National Guard. Hill was planning to do the same.

"He is a close friend to me, he was always good to me, and he helped me work on my truck a lot, and he was always there for me. It's tough," he said.

Ty Davidson also graduated with Hill two weeks ago. Now, the memories of that celebration have changed over to heartbreak.

"He just loved life, he was always a happy kid, he was never angry at anything, he was just fun to be around," Davidson said. "Never experienced anything like it, I don't want to experience it again."

The Swan Valley School District has experienced this all too often. Since 2010, several students and graduates of the school, including Schuyler Hickey, Brandon Walker and Lucas Isom have lost their lives in traffic accidents. The community continues to rally around Alex Dils, a 2014 graduate who is battling cancer. Now this.

Craig Blower is the principal at Swan Valley High.

"The sad thing is, we know what to do, and that saddens me. This is what we do because we have done it so often," Blower said.

A prayer service for Dakota Hill and his family is scheduled for Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on River Road.
