Downtown Midland's East End celebrates grand opening

MIDLAND (WJRT) - (06/19/14) - Thursday marks a huge milestone for the city of Midland; they're celebrating the grand opening of a new downtown building, the East End.

This new complex is huge for the city, but especially for downtown. The workforce downtown is going to double because of the various businesses opening at the East End.

"This is so exciting," said Barb Wilson, who lives in Midland.

"We're looking at this piece of dirt here, 18 months ago there was an old gas station that sold cars and a printing press," said Pat Gillespie, president of the Gillespie Group. "And now to see it transform into this high energy, 800 to 1,000 people sitting here."

The Gillespie group is behind this $48 million, 225,000 square foot facility. It sits right next door to Dow Diamond.

Inside, you'll find Chemical Bank, State Street, a law firm and more. Developers introduced the latest tenant at Thursday's grand opening celebration.

"Michigan State University's going to open a classroom here, a research building, this is just their start, they really plan on growing quite a bit," Gillespie said.

Neighbors are thrilled to see their downtown grow and can't wait to take a stroll through the East End.

"Along with the Loons stadium, the new restaurants that we've had, all the shops that are down here, the specialty shopping and the people that have been here who are looking at the mall area? No no, come down here this is where it's at," Wilson said.
