Genesee County crews to maintain four Flint parks

Posted: Updated:
GENESEE TOWNSHIP (WJRT) - (06/20/14) - Four Flint parks should look a little nicer now that city and Genesee County officials have reach an agreement on a maintenance plan. Flint officials have struggled for years to cut the grass and trim the trees in its parks.

Genesee County parks are usually in great shape, so the county wants to lend the city a helping hand.

Work crews will be seen in four Flint parks - Max Brandon, Flint Park Lake, Thread Lake and McKinley. The agreement starts July 7.The County Board of Commissioners has approved the plan. Crews will mow in the parks, pick up litter and remove dead tree limbs, check on the condition of playground equipment and generally spruce up the parks.

Ten years ago, Max Brandon Park had been maintained by the county, but that agreement expired and was never renewed. City and county officials have been negotiating this maintenance plan for the past six months. Flint has more than 60 parks, but little money for upkeep. The parks that will get help from the county are some of the largest and most popular.

"Well, our job is to really maintain and operate the parks, to make sure the are in great shape like all of the county parks and also to patrol the parks. We have our own police force, the Genesee County Park Rangers. And so they'll be there to keep the parks safe in the way they are at all of the other country parks. If parks are in bad condition, it has a really bad effect on the whole neighborhood, on property values, on crime. But when parks are in good condition, property values rise, neighborhoods are more stable," said Amy McMillan, Genesee County Parks and Rec director. The added work shouldn't cost the county much. It's about $215,000 in additional wages and other expenses, but the city will pick up part of the bill and there are grants available to make up much of the difference.
