SVSU officially welcomes new president, Donald Bachand

KOCHVILLE TOWNSHIP (WJRT) - (06/22/14) - Saginaw Valley State University officially has a new leader.

Students, staff and the community welcomed Donald Bachand to his new role as University President.

Bachand wants to maintain its current level of enrollment of more than 10,000 students, but develop programs that will serve both students and the community.

"I feel very comfortable moving into the role," he said.

SVSU's new president is no stranger to the university. He's been working there since 1978, starting as an assistant professor of criminal justice.

"So what we're going to do going forward is build on the strengths that we have," Bachand said.

Donald Bachand is SVSU's fourth president in 51 years. He's proud of the university's tradition - and keeping students here in the state.

"So many of our graduates want to stay in Michigan," he said.

When it comes to plans for the future, he said health care is where it's at, especially careers in taking care of the aging population.

"We've studied that for a number of years, there's going to be a lot of need for professional workers and there's going to be a lot of opportunities for people to work in those kinds of facilities," Bachand said.

Congressman Dan Kildee agrees with the university's decision to chose Bachand.

"This is not just important to the university as in institution but his leadership is really critical to the community, to the region,n to the whole state of Michigan going forward," Kildee said.
