Mt. Morris Twp. honors little girl who saved families from fire

Posted: Updated:
(06/23/14) - If not for a 9-year-old little girl, 12 families might not be alive today. She saw that a Mount Morris Township apartment complex was on fire last month and raced from door to door to warn everyone.

Monday, the township is honoring her for her bravery and commitment to her community.

Ceana Washington didn't just stand there; she ran to each apartment at Cranbrook Village, warning them of the flames.

"I went to everybody door, knocking and knocking, and I got on my knees and I said, 'bless these people, because this is going to be trouble and we need some help right now,'" she said the day of the fire.

Now, the township is declaring June 23 as Ceana Washington Day in Mt. Morris Township.

"I'm just very happy for her and very proud of her and I know that as a teacher, her teacher, if she was my daughter, I would be extremely proud of her," said Ana Gushen, who teaches Ceana at Dailey Elementary.

Washington smiles and acknowledges her bravery, but even now, her thoughts are with those families who lost everything but their lives.

"It hurt my feelings because they got all they stuff in there, they children's clothes got burned up, the shoes and the stuff they kept," she said.
