Flint schools reveal even more debt to tackle

FLINT (WJRT) - (06/26/14) - Wednesday night, the Flint Community Schools will unveil a turnaround strategy to build a strong academic, financial future for students. This is after the district's financial team combed through the budget, revealing even more debt.  But, there may be a surplus as well.

The financial team began scouring through the books about two weeks ago. They found an initial additional shortfall of between $5 million to $10 million to the just concluded 2013-2014 year.

Watkins announced that the 2014-15 budget includes a surplus of more than $3 million that will be used to pay down debt.

The district is already facing a $10.4 million debt on top of that.

This new strategy discussed Wednesday may address this latest shortfall.

Superintendent Larry Watkins is saying a key component of the strategy is to right-size the school district - that's making sure the district has the right number of teachers, staff and other personnel.

There are over 6,800 students in Flint schools with 15 school buildings being used.
