BAY COUNTY (WJRT) - (06/26/14) - A Bangor Township father is charged with abusing his three month old daughter.

Police say Garrett Gwizdala told them the baby girl had fallen off of his chest, while he was asleep, but investigators say that story took a disturbing turn.

The 24-year-old man told a Bay County Sheriff's deputy he tried giving the child CPR Wednesday afternoon in the home in the 3400 block of North Euclid.

Bay County Sheriff John Miller says his deputy was suspicious of the man’s story.

Miller says, “The eyes were swollen shut, there were marks on the chest, those types of things, it is evident to a trained investigator as to what happened,” Miller said.

Miller says, after his arrest, the man’s story changed - he confessed to what he did.

“They found that the father was upset because the baby was crying, smothered it, and compressed the chest to make the child quit crying,” Miller said. “Which caused the child to stop breathing.”

At last check, the three month old was in the hospital in stable condition.
