FLINT (WJRT) - (06/26/14) - There was a devastating blow for Flint community schools Thursday night. The district was already facing a $10 million deficit. Now that deficit has practically doubled to nearly $20 million.

The startling news has some parents ready to pull out of the district.

The district's financial team discovered the shortfall within the last two weeks while going through the books.

"The indicators are there was some sloppy accounting done by the school district," said Interim Superintendent Larry Watkins.

On the other hand, the district is also expecting a surplus in the budget next year, which could offset some of the increased debt.

Flint community schools has until July 31 to come up with a plan to wipe out the new deficit and submit it to the state.

The board also approved closing Northern School Thursday night.
