(06/27/14) - It's a tradition that dates back to 1909: The Congressional Baseball Game.

It's Republicans versus Democrats, but they're not squaring off on Capitol Hill. On Tuesday night, they took their competition to the baseball diamond.

“It's a tradition. Baseball is a tradition in our country, and it's a tradition for us to get together like this, so it's kind of fun – it's cool,” said Rep. Dan Kildee (D-MI).

He hits right, he throws right, but he votes left. And for the second year in a row, Congressman Dan Kildee played with the Democrats in the Congressional Baseball Game for charity.

He had a cheering section on hand, and he represented his alma mater with a uniform.

“This is home. A lot of my constituents go to Central Michigan University, I just met with a group of CMU alumni who working in Washington, they're all coming to the game,” Kildee said.

The competition is friendly, but fierce.

“We're all smiling and friendly, but there were a couple of shots on the floor today – people talking about it,” Kildee said.

Last year, the Democrats blanked the Republicans 22-0, so the Republicans were looking to redeem themselves. Kildee didn't want to let that happen.

“Playing in a major league ball park is a lot of fun, but you know, it's more fun if you win, that's for sure,” he said.

Win or lose, left or right, for these politicians, this game means a break from partisan battles to just play ball.

The Republicans will have to wait another year for redemption. The Democrats beat them again, 15 to 6.
