Sheriff warns to slow down and stop at yellow traffic lights

Posted: Updated:
THOMAS TOWNSHIP (WJRT) - (06/27/14) - A recent tragedy has the Saginaw County sheriff reminding everyone to obey traffic signals.

Less than two weeks ago, 18-year-old Dakota Hill died in a car crash at Gratiot and River Roads in Thomas Township.

Hill had just graduated from Swan Valley High School.

"We are starting to see a lot more because we see the traffic picking up," says Saginaw County Sheriff Bill Federspiel.

A lot more accidents on Gratiot Road in Thomas Township west of Saginaw. Plenty of businesses, lots of traffic, and now another reminder of how dangerous the road can be. A memorial is in place near the spot where a crash took the life of Dakota Hill. Police believe he was going through a yellow light that was turning red when his pick-up hit a car that was turning from Gratiot onto River Road.

Don't be surprised to see a few more sheriff's cars in the area.

"We are just out here to educate people, let people know, that when you see a yellow light, it doesn't mean to speed up and get through the light, it means slow down and prepare to stop," Federspiel said.

Federspiel, in coordination with the Thomas Township Police, will have deputies watching the intersection to catch drivers who don't follow those rules.

"Silver Honda, steady yellow," radios a deputy.

That car turned into a parking lot, but a truck driver did the same thing a short time later.

"The signal on Gratiot back at River was a steady yellow when you approached it, it turned red while you were going through it, that's why I'm stopping you," said deputy Jon Brown.

Federspiel says the goal is not to make money writing tickets, it's to get people to slow down and stop when the light turns yellow.

"I'm not going to give you a ticket, just use caution in the future, drive safe," Brown said.

"Thank you very much," the truck driver said.

So far the sheriff's department has written few tickets in this campaign. It's been mainly warnings.
