Local couple finds valuable items in abandoned storage unit, looking for owners

(06/27/14) - Fenton business owners made an unbelievable discovery inside of a local storage unit.

They were searching for treasures to sell in their store, but instead found something that would be priceless to a local man's family.

Rebecca and David Howard have become detectives, trying to piece together a man's life so they can return valuable items to his family.

"I don't know why, I don't know why I am crying," Rebecca said. She's grieving for man she's never met, but feels like she knows.

"This is the letter to his family from the president at the time, who was Bill Clinton," she said.

This story begins at Access Storage in Holly.

The Howards say they bought a storage unit looking for treasure to sell in their store -  Howard's Hidden Treasures in Fenton  - when they stumbled across a man's life hidden in boxes.

"We uncovered the rest of the items, the purple heart, the medals from WW II, everything from this man's life," David said.

Cecil O'Connell's purple heart, love letters he wrote to his wife while serving and even the flag used to drape his casket were collecting dust in an abandoned storage unit in Holly.

"I was shocked someone was so careless with their ancestry," David said.

So, the Howards went from treasure hunters to detectives. They called veterans affairs hoping to  track down O'Connell's family - but they hit a dead end.

That's why they called ABC12, hoping to reunite these priceless treasures with his family.

"I just want this to be home with their family" Rebecca said.

Based on all the item in the box, Rebecca says O'Connell last lived in Holly and was buried in Flint.
