Sebewaing River to be dredged this summer

Posted: Updated:
SEBEWAING (WJRT) - (06/30/14) - Expect to see some changes along the Sebewaing River in Huron County.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has given a contractor the go ahead to start dredging.

The work will focus on the river, near the mouth to the Saginaw Bay.

The contractor can start digging any time now, but the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says it may be a few weeks before you see anyone actively dredging.

We're told there is still some work to be done to the deposit sites, where the leftover sediment will be placed.

A Corps spokeswoman says the work is being done for navigational reasons.

Boaters tell me the river just isn't deep enough in places.

The project is made possible by some emergency money Gov. Rick Snyder made available last year, to help deal with record low water levels at that time.

It will cost $1.3 million to do.

Spots in the river five feet or shallower will be dug up.

The work will last until the end of October.

"The river does need it, like I said, this year the water level's up, but last year there was some problems getting out. You hit bottom and you take a prop out or, or the lower part of the motor and  it gets, it gets costly," said Larry Hoist, a boater along the river.

Not everyone is happy about the dredging along the river.

We spoke to one woman off-camera who says it'll ruin her view.

She and her husband bought their home in 1970. When the river was dredged several years ago, the sediment that was dug up was placed just across the channel, blocking their view of the Saginaw Bay.

This time around, she fears the new deposit site will block her view of the airport, where she often watches deer and other wildlife.

One other complaint we heard was that some people are worried the dredging will keep them from some of their favorite fishing spots.

The last time the Sebewaing River was dredged was 2008.
