ORV's to be allowed along state highways in Huron County

Posted: Updated:
HURON COUNTY (WJRT) - (06/30/14) - The rules of the road are changing in Huron County.

Starting Tuesday, it will be legal to drive four-wheelers and other off-road vehicles along state highways.

From homeowners to business owners to tourists, many feel allowing ORV's to drive on those roads is long overdue.

If you live or visit tourist towns like Caseville, chances are good you might own an ORV.

"I use it for cleaning our beach." I also use it to go down to get some gas occasionally," said Joe McBride.

McBride is one of many Huron County homeowners welcoming a new ordinance allowing off-road vehicles - or ORV's - to drive along state highways.

"Very easy and very inexpensive, and quick, you don't have to take the car out," he said.

It's now up to individual counties to decide the rules of the road when it comes to ORV's and state highways.

Huron County just OK'ed driving along M-19, M-25, M-53 and M-142.

"People come up to Caseville to do things that they can't do in the city, right? They come up here to have a different lifestyle," said Larry Degg, Caseville township supervisor.

Before the change, it would have been illegal to drive an ORV along M-25 to get to the Main Sail Quik Stop. You had to use a gas can or put your ORV on a trailer. Not any more.

"It's going to bring more business in for us, and which we highly need," said Emily Witherspoon, of Main Sail Quik Stop.

There are some concerns.

"Unfortunately, there will be accidents, there's no question about that, but not anymore than you would normally have," McBride said.

The Huron County Sheriff once had similar concerns, but he says another change a few years ago - allowing ORV's on county roads - showed it wasn't a problem.

Already, some people are looking forward to helping the local economy.

"My wife already told me I could buy one," Degg said.
