27th Bay City River Roar successful for racers, businesses

Posted: Updated:
BAY CITY (WJRT) - (06/29/14) - Engines were roaring on the Saginaw River, Sunday, for the Bay City River Roar.

It's all part of the twenty-seventh year of professional boat races out on the river.

Sunday's weather almost put a damper on the fun, but Mother Nature cooperated just in time. The rain and waves did cause about a 45 minute delay.

Crowds lined the river to see the races all weekend long.

These boats can get up to 140 miles per hour.

It's a popular event, and some call it the kick off to Bay City's summer festival season.

With so many people hanging out in the city, it's a great boost to local businesses.

"Great economic impact, huge impact on our community," said Ginger Drzewicki, vice president of River Roar.

Now, businesses are looking forward to one of the biggest weekends of the year: the Bay City Fireworks Festival.

"We normally have lines out the door, way down the street just all night until the fireworks, then we get a little break, then it's right back to it," said Shannon Meyers, who works at Buoy 18.

That warm weather rush and bright Bay City sky are exactly what wait staff and bartenders need to put a little extra green in their wallet.

"I think everybody that's a bar tender in Bay City looks forward to these kind of weekends," said Megan Ladrigue, who works at The Stables Martini and Cigar Bar. "I know I'm ready for it, we love the atmosphere and people are out to party and have a good time and we're definitely prepared and ready to give them that good time."

The Bay City Fireworks Festival starts this Thursday and lasts through Saturday. You can watch the finale on ABC12 Saturday night.
