Travel expected to increase for the holiday weekend

Posted: Updated:
MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) - (07/02/14) - Despite the fluctuating gas prices, travel is still expected to be up in the state this holiday weekend.

AAA of Michigan says travel is expected to increase by 2.5 percent in the state. That's for drivers traveling 50 miles or more.

Although gas prices in Mid-Michigan are going down, some drivers wonder how much longer they will stay this way.

Just five days ago, the average price for gas was $3.95 in Flint. Wednesday, it's more like $3.84.

"I'm surprised it isn't higher being a holiday weekend," said Christy Matthewson, a driver.

Prices aren't expected to go up this weekend, but drivers shouldn't get their hopes up just yet.

"It's possible that we continue to see prices fall today and tomorrow into July Fourth, there is an outside chance that prices may go up, but right now, it's not really obvious that that will happen," said Patrick DeHaan, a senior petroleum analyst.

A spokesperson with AAA says the last time they saw this many people traveling over the Fourth was 2007.
