CrimeStoppers offering reward for 2012 Flint murder

Posted: Updated:
FLINT (WJRT) - (07/06/14) - It's been a long two years for a Genesee County family looking for answers after their loved one was killed in May 2012, but they hope a new Crime Stoppers reward of up to $2,500 will get people talking.

"He's a teddy bear. He's a big kid. Thirty years old, but a big kid," said Ron Hinman, Matthew Angell's brother.

Angell was the oldest of seven siblings.

"Naive might have been a little way to describe him. He trusted everybody," Hinman said.

Hinman doesn't know why someone shot his big brother back, but they hope the Crime Stoppers reward will help.

"I guess that's the worst thing is not knowing why. You know when you lose somebody to a car accident or natural causes, or something like that, you know why they passed away. With a homicide, you don't really ever know why. What was going through that person's mind," Hinman said.

"I go to the gas station, I go to the store and look at the person in line behind me thinking, 'Are you the person who killed my son?'" said Pam Bailey, Angell's mother.

Angell was shot and killed inside his GMC Yukon in the 1700 block of Montana Avenue in Flint.

The shooting happened around 10 p.m., May 6, 2012.

The SUV was parked half on the street, half in a driveway. That's puzzling to his family.

"I know if somebody was robbing him, he would have gave them everything. And I just think about what he went through, you know, how scared he probably was," Hinman said.

His family thinks he was on his way to a friend's house. That friend was one of many who loved classic cars just like Angell.

But Angell will never get to work on one again, even though his killer gets to enjoy life's everyday moments.

"I want to see them sit in prison, not have their daily, you know go get their coffee. To go socialize, to see their family. I don't want that. I don't want them to have those privileges," Bailey said.

If you know anything about Angell's murder, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
