Genesee County neighborhood floods after overnight rain
GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -
(07/07/14) - The heavy rains early Monday morning are making it nearly impossible for some residents to get out of their driveways.
It's the third time this year that a Grand Blanc Township neighborhood has been underwater.
Some neighbors who live on Pine Valley Drive in the Del Webb community say every time there's a heavy rain, they can't get down the street.
"Right now I'm trapped, my little car would never make it out of my driveway," said Sharon Fleming.
Fleming just moved into her newly built home in April. Now she has mixed feelings about that move.
"I love the inside of my house, that's about as far as I can say. The outside is just not livable," she said.
Most of the homes on this street are newly built, which means a lot of construction is taking place in the neighborhood.
A spokesperson for Del Webb says construction in this subdivision could take as long as two years to complete. Residents hope the problems don't last that long.
Crews were out Monday trying to find manholes and remove soak bags to help the water drain out. Soak bags are designed to keep debris out of the drain system.
"Once the rain and the water starts coming down, it brings all that mud and these bags collect all of the debris that goes down into the drain so it don't get into the system and then we have to pull the bags and replace them. With all of that rain we got last night, I knew we were going to be out here," said Kenneth Appleton, of Curbco. "We can't pick up the bags right at this moment, so we got a machine that's going to be coming out here to give us a hand."
Crews with Curbco say situations like this will more than likely continue to be a problem until construction is completed in this neighborhood.
