Manufacturing jobs at American Spiral Weld Company available

Posted: Updated:
(07/07/14) - Jobs are being created by the construction of a water pipeline from Lake Huron to Flint. Some of the pipes needed for the project have arrived.

Eventually, pipes for the KWA pipeline will be made at a factory under construction at the former site of Buick City in Flint. For now, they will come from Alabama.

You can see from I-475 the factory is starting to take shape. American Spiral Weld Pipe Company is building the facility to manufacture the pipes needed for the 60-mile long project. It won't be up and running until this fall, so the company is bringing in pipes from another factory.

They arrived this past weekend.

"They put it on rail and bring it up to this site, unload it at the Buick site," said John O'Brien, Genesee County Water and Waste Services director.

From here, they'll put the pipes on trucks and take them out to Lake Huron north of Port Huron. American Spiral Weld Pipe is still looking to hire a number of workers at the Flint factory. The company website lists jobs in production, maintenance and welding. For a list, click here. While the first project is for the KWA pipeline, the company says there will be other regional water infrastructure projects.

On the Lake Huron shore, KWA workers are making good progress.

"We finished the tunneling into the lake. So they tunneled out and retrieved the machine," O'Brien said.

The pipeline will supply 60 million gallons of water a day to Sanilac, Lapeer and Genesee Counties. Several food-related companies have expressed interest in locating in the area because of the abundant supply of water. But for now, construction crews will be digging  the trench where the pipeline will be buried. They'll have to cross 200 streams and take care not to harm endangered species like the eastern massasauga rattlesnake while trying to stick to the time line.

"The projection is summer of 2016," O'Brien said.
