BURTON (WJRT) -
(07/09/14) - Genesee County Parks will build a new hoop house this weekend at For-Mar Nature Preserve.
They were awarded one of only 15 grants nationwide from the Darden Foundation to pay for the project.
Parks Director Amy McMillan says seeing kids' reaction to the community gardens has her excited about this expansion.
"They're just fascinated by learning where food really comes from. We have community gardens in each of our parks with our playground program, and when kids pull their first radish from the ground or they pick their first leaf of lettuce, it's like a whole new experience, something they would never consider eating before, it's like oh my gosh, I grew that, I'm gonna eat a tomato," she said.
Crops grown in the garden will be distributed to the local community.
