Teens take part in "Mission Makeover"

GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) - (07/09/14) - It's an effort to make the community a better place, and this project is powered by a group of teens.

"We're doing the Mission Makeover and we're doing it because it's fun and you get to help people out," said Kristen Swiantek, one of 50 teen volunteers from Holy Family Catholic Church.

This week they decided to spend some of the lazy days of summer, doing hard work.

"Helping around the community, helping everybody out," said volunteer Mason Graves.

"We help them out because we can," said Paula Benavides, another volunteer.

For each of the last three years, Swiantek has been a part of Mission Makeover.

"You really get to see how you're making a difference in people's lives. Even the small things count," she said.

Swiantek is part of a group working on a fellow parishioner's home in Grand Blanc.

The teens picked up yard waste, and even planted something new, but that's not all they've been up to.

"We work on the soup kitchen, we work at Catholic Charities, Carriage Town, people's house that need help," Swiantek said.

The kids take turns at the various locations.

Thankfully, it's not all work and no play.

"Kind of like a mix of work and fun. We're working, but we're laughing at the same time," said Ethan Freel, another volunteer.

At the end of each day, they do team building exercises and reflect on the positive role they're playing in other people's lives.

"Get to see that how blessed you are," Swiantek said.
