Suicides have increased in mid-Michigan

Posted: Updated:
(07/09/14) - It's a topic most people don't like to talk about, but it's taking more and more lives in Genesee County - especially young lives.
We're talking about suicide.
ABC12 has learned that suicides are up slightly in Mid-Michigan.
The increase has become more prevalent in the past four years.

Lauren Tompkins, the Chief Clinical officer with the Genesee Health System, says her office is seeing more and more cases like this.
In 2009, her office reported 49 suicides and 58 in 2012.
Those deaths reported are individuals who rely on those services with the Genesee Health System.
Tompkins adds that the use of psychiatric facilities has increased among children.
Some of the factors that lead to suicides are loss of jobs, depression and bullying.
Experts say it's important for loved one's and friends to pay attention to warning signs.

"Of course we hope that we're going to recognize the signs and symptoms in advance; extreme changes in behavior; performance in school or work that are different from the patterns we typically would see with that person. Maybe a withdraw from others," Tompkins said.

Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States.
