Protests greet plans to house child migrants

Posted: Updated:

VASSAR, Mich. (AP) - A social services organization says it wants to house some children from Central America at a facility in a small Michigan community, prompting protests at a meeting about the plans.

Grosse Pointe Park-based Wolverine Human Services has a 145-bed juvenile facility in Vassar called the Pioneer Work and Learn Center. Senior vice president Derrick McCree told a crowd Wednesday that it wants community support for the plans.

The Saginaw News reports protesters gathered outside Vassar High School before the meeting.

Wolverine Human Services' plans for the facility about 70 miles northwest of Detroit were earlier reported by The Detroit News. They come as pressure mounts on the federal government to treat as refugees the thousands of children traveling alone from Central America and crossing the border into the U.S.
