A plan to outsource jobs is latest budget cutting move by Flint Schools

(07/10/14) - A plan to outsource jobs is the latest budget-cutting move by the Flint Community Schools.

Starting in the next school year, substitute teachers, tech workers and safety advocates will be hired by outside companies.

Athletic coaches are also included on that list.

We've been told this will save the district about half a million dollars annually.

ABC12 News talked to a substitute teacher and a school board member, Thursday, about the plan..

"Our children are our future and what kind of future will we have? We don't have anything," said Shirley Johnson, a substitute teacher with Flint Schools.

For Flint School leaders, it's a never-ending task, finding ways to save money with the district facing a budget deficit of more than $20 million. The decision was made to outsource 150 jobs at Wednesday night's school board meeting.

Johnson isn't against the idea.

"I don't think it's a horrible idea because we can't afford it," she said.

Once approved, the district plans to outsource with Professional Educational Services Group or PSEG in Burton.

That's for instructional staffing.

As far as non-instructional services, Flint will work with Educational Staffing Resources based in Grand Rapids.

The district plans to sign a one-year contract with both companies to see how things work out.

One board member doesn't like the idea.

"Like I said to them, testing to see how something works out when you have children involved is the wrong way to do it, you need to fully dig deep and investigate these people and make sure that they're the ones that you want," said Dave Davenport.

In the mean time, Johnson, who's been a substitute teacher with the district for nearly five years, is concerned about the future of Flint Schools.

"Right now, I think we just keep digging a hole and we just keep digging and we just going farther and farther in the hole," she said.

The district has until the end of this month to turn in a revised deficit elimination plan to the state.
