Dredging to improve St. Joseph River harbor access

Posted: Updated:

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. (AP) - Officials say dredging work in southwestern Michigan will improve access to the St. Joseph River harbor.

The Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph reports (http://bit.ly/1mR8WFu ) maintenance dredging funded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was completed on the outer harbor last month. A contractor is scheduled to start working next week on the inner harbor.

An update on the work to the St. Joseph River Harbor Authority says dredging of the inner harbor is expected to last about four weeks.

The Army Corps was allocated $1.5 million this year to dredge the St. Joseph River harbor. To assist recreational boaters, Berrien County last year administered a state grant that provided $305,000 to dredge parts of an 1,800-foot section of the river.
