Rally for Palestinians held at state capitol

Posted: Updated:
LANSING (WJRT) - (07/23/14) - The unrest is intensifying in Gaza as Secretary of State John Kerry heads to Tel-Aviv, pleading with Israelis for a cease-fire.

Back here at home, more than 100 protestors took the capitol in Lansing, Wednesday, to speak out against what is happening in the Middle East.

According to recent reports, in the last 15 days, nearly 650 Palestinians and 34 Israelis have been killed in the conflict. Many of those Palestinians are civilians, which is striking a nerve internationally and back here at home.

Fifteen-year-old Haneen Hammad decided to take action and organize Wednesday's public cry for help for the Palestinian people.

"I couldn't help it. I just needed to do more than cry. I wanted to fight for them in a way our voices would be heard," she said. .

She was inspired by her own heritage, but what moved her to action was seeing the unrest with her own eyes.

"This protest if definitely not political or about religion, it's about humanity and I just want people to get inspired and do more for the people of Palestine," she said.

Haneen's grandma, Watafa Ramadan, even joined in the protest.

"They demolish the houses, they are killing them with no mercy. That's what I'm here for. Stop the killing, stop the fighting. It is not worth killing all these kids for nothing," Ramadan said.

The protestors met no counter protest in Lansing.
