Saginaw County Fair returns for 101st year

Posted: Updated:
SAGINAW COUNTY (WJRT) - (07/28/14) - It's one of longest running events of its kind in the entire United States. The Saginaw County Fair is back for it's one hundred and first year.

"Oh, this is a huge deal. Our family has always been involved and I was born into it. It's exciting for all the kids," said Teresa Kayden, Saginaw County Fair board member.

Since moving from Saginaw to Chesaning in 2002, attendance has been growing at a steady rate.

"We usually get two to three thousand more each year. We're hoping to get somewhere around the 25,000 mark this year," said  Francis Sloan, Saginaw County Fair president.

Admission to the Saginaw County Fairgrounds remains at the one hundredth anniversary price of $10. That includes everything from parking to carnival rides and grand stand attractions.

New this year, an expanded carnival with more rides than ever before - not to mention moto-cross and monster trucks.

"The broken horn rodeo on Saturday and we also have an American Girl Tea Party at 11 o'clock, free at the Gazebo," said Patti Copes, Saginaw County Fair board member.

Back by popular demand - one of the most intense hog calling contests Mid-Michigan has ever seen.

Speaking of squealing pigs, and other barnyard critters, the fair gives 4-H club members an opportunity to show off their animals and to fight for best in show.

"We are definitely here to compete. We're going to be barrel racing and pole bending and pleasure riding. It should be a fun week," said Avery Copes, competitor.

The Saginaw Fair runs Tuesday-Saturday at the county fairgrounds in Chesaning.
