FRANKENMUTH (WJRT) -
(08/06/14) - It's an expansion of Frankenmuth's Sugar High Bakery that literally happened overnight. The all-new Sugar High café is now open. It's located downtown on Main Street - in the spot previously held by Panda Water Ice Haus.
"We definitely did not plan this. We only came down here with the expectation of purchasing some equipment, and then we walked away with the keys. It was just a big surprise for us," said Heather Rousseau, co-owner of Sugar High Cafe.
The café sprang to life last week and it complements the bakery, and Sugar Rush candy, which both sit down the road in River Place. Let's just say they're looking to hire immediately, for all three locations.
"We were only shut down for one day, and then we immediately opened. We haven't even gotten our signs up, so we're probably confusing people a little bit," Heather said.
For now, Heather and Adam Rousseau are going with a simple food menu, featuring items like bubbler teas, paninnis, grilled cheese, brats and hot dogs.
"There's a lot of great food in town, so we're hoping to focus on the meal between breakfast and chicken, so easy portable food, inexpensive and delicious," Heather said.
As for deserts, there's ice cream, sorbet, and of course, cupcakes and candy from both the bakery and candy shops - along with a few other "treats".
The Sugar High Brand rose to fame in 2012 with its victory on Food Network's Cupcake Wars. That exposure is still paying off.
"Since we've been on Cupcake Wars, it's been awesome. We've been so busy, and it really gave us the opportunity to expand and open this location. It's been nuts," Heather said.
The Rousseau's hope that with Sugar High Cafe up and running, that Food Network might just call again.
"We're ready to go. We've got three stores, and we're ready to go on TV and compete. Give them our number," Adam said.
