Bay County water leak fully contained, all restrictions lifted

Posted: Updated:
BAY COUNTY (WJRT) - (08/12/14) - The crisis that restricted water use for most Bay County residents since Saturday officially ended Tuesday afternoon.

The main leak was found Monday, but smaller leaks remained, so some water restrictions remained in effect on Tuesday.

Bay City and county officials wanted everyone to hold off filling up pools and washing cars. Those restrictions were lifted around 3 p.m.

"We are seeing a huge improvement in the amount of water reserves that we have in the tanks," said Ryan Manz, Bay County emergency coordinator.

Businesses which rely on water were able to resume normal operations earlier Tuesday. Residents were then given the OK for non-essential usage, like lawn watering and swimming pools.

"There could be a few small leaks out there and we should know more in the next 24 hours,"  Manz said.

Those leaks were caused by turning valves on and off - creating pressure problems in the system. For now, the pressure is off of city and county workers who started looking for the leak on Saturday.

"Not having a lot of sleep, they were very determined they were going to find this, they would come back and sleep a few hours and then go right back out," said Dana Muscott, deputy city manager

The critical water leak came less than a year before the new Bay Area Water Treatment plant goes into operation. The $60 million facility is still under construction. Infrastructure improvements will be looked at before it goes online next June.

"It's coming at a time when we are switching over to this new plant, and obviously that will be looked at, the infrastructure throughout the city and the county," Muscott said.

The repair of that broken water main that caused all this trouble should begin tomorrow.
