BAY CITY (WJRT) -
(08/19/14) - He's accused of posting nude photos of his ex-girlfriend on a social media site in an Internet harassment case that has landed the man in jail.
Police say the 34-year-old Bay City man told the woman he would make her life miserable until she killed herself. She went to the police instead.
The woman said Chad Monroe wanted some of his property back, and when he didn't get what he thought was rightfully his, police say he began a scary social media campaign of threats and harassment.
"There were several incidents that took place. She was concerned for her safety," said Bay City Police public safety captain, Joe Lanava.
Monroe is accused of harassing his ex-girlfriend over the Internet - from posting nude photos of the woman on Facebook, to putting an ad on Craigslist for the woman's services.
"Something inappropriate, and to call a phone number and of course, it had a picture of her," Lanava said.
She claims attempts to block Monroe from contacting her through social media didn't work.
"This person would actually create different accounts, and different names in an attempt to make contact that way," Lanava said.
The woman and her mother came to the Bay City Police Department to report the harassment. When Bay City Police contacted Monroe, he told them his lawyer said it was OK to put naked pictures of the woman on Facebook.
"I find that hard to believe that any attorney would give that type of advice," Lanava said.
Lanava says Facebook removed the nude photos, but in a way, it's too late.
"They did and they usually do, but it's just a matter of as somebody views it, they can save it," he said.
Monroe was released from prison last year; his last conviction was a stolen property case. He now faces one count of stalking and another count of unlawful posting of a message on the Internet, which is a two year felony.
"By posting something that causes emotional distress, that can be a felony," Lanava said.
Monroe is still in jail on a $35,000 cash bond. He also is accused of violating a personal protection order the woman filed against him.
