Flint city council public works committee has busy evening

Posted: Updated:
FLINT (WJRT) - (08/19/14) - The Public Works Committee of the Flint City Council usually doesn't get a lot of attention, but recent events in the city have put the spotlight on the members.

We have been following the eviction situation at Glen Acre Estates in Flint since it happened two weeks ago this Tuesday. Twenty eight families were evicted from their apartments after the owner of the complex failed to pay water bills. That forced the City of Flint to condemn them for not having running water. All 28 families are now out of their homes at Glen Acre Estates.

The director of the city's department of public works says the owner of the apartment complex has come up with some of the $74,000 owed to the city.

"We are in receipt of a payment. We do have an agreement for the next payment to come in. We were able to get a few out there and get the water on after a couple of attempts," said Howard Croft, Flint DPW director.

A boil water advisory remains in effect for a portion of Flint water customers on the west side of the city after e-coli was detected in some water samples.

"We don't believe the first e-coli sample was accurate. We don't believe there was e-coli in the system. We believe it was the testing location, but there were coliform bacteria in the system in that area so that's why we did the localized filtering and chlorine increase," said Daugherty Johnson, Flint utilities director.

First Ward City Council Member Eric Mays was at the committee meeting wearing a court ordered tether while appealing an impaired driving conviction. He's not allowed to drive.

"I've been walking. I've got friends and I'm staying close in the area right now. For the first week or so I'm camping out close by and eventually I might head back to the first ward," he said.

Mays said the electronic tether is costing him $216 a week.
